I spent the first 50 years in London, 30 of them
in the London Fire Brigade. In those (good old) days the L.F.B. had a
military band of which I was a member. We gave concerts at most of the
outdoor venues in London, such as the Royal Parks, St. Paul's steps, Finsbury
Circus gardens, Embankment gardens and indoors at Westminster Abbey, St.
Paul's Cathedral and the Royal Festival Hall. Quite often I would be playing
my baritone sax in a lunchtime engagement, and then driving a fire appliance
on a night shift at the fire station. On my retirement in 1980, I moved
to Devon with my wife and our two sons. In 1992 my interest in music was
rekindled on hearing the Exmouth Town Concert Band on a visit to the seaside.
Since then I have played with several local bands, but confine my musical
activities to just two. The Exmouth Town Concert Band (Alto sax) and Taunton
Concert Band (Baritone sax).
