Exmouth Town Concert Band

History Of The Band

The first Exmouth band that we have knowledge of was from details taken from a picture of the band on the occasion of Queen Victoria's Jubilee. Because she had two jubilees, Golden on June 21st 1887 and Diamond June 22nd 1897 it is not know which Jubilee the photograph dates from.

The band in its present form was started by a group of local enthusiasts, headed by the late Frank Chiverton and his wife Jean in June 1981. Jean still plays bass clarinet with the band. The band membership stands at around 64 members with 30 to 35 appearing at most engagements.

The band played at VE day celebration concert in May 1995 at the Exmouth pavilion that was a sell out as was the VJ day concert in August. As a result of the success of these concerts, 'Proms' style concerts were given in 1995-2003 to capacity audiences, with another planned for November 2004.

In 1998 the band in its new marching form headed the parade for the USA memorial service held at Phear Park, Exmouth for the World War II veterans, beside the Scout/Cubs/Brownies parade for St George's Day and to the parade for the July 4th 1998 celebrations of America in Pinhoe Exeter, where the Band was very much applauded. The band continues to parade annually for the Remembrance Day in Exmouth.

Due to the Royal Marine Band, Commando Training Centre Lympstone, being unable to complete their series of winter concerts at the Exmouth Pavilion because of duties on board HMS Ocean, it was decided to hold a 'one off concert' of our own to those starved of a good military style RMB concerts. We gave our own very first 'in house' concert in November 1999 at the Exmouth Pavilion to a very appreciative, sell out audience. Since then we have given our very own concerts in the pavilion in April and October each year since, each time selecting a different sponsored charity.

Concerts for the band this year have included events for the Exmouth Music & Arts Weekend / Weston Super Mare in Avon beside numerous local fetes. The band also performs 'free' to the public every Monday evening during the summer months in the grounds of the Imperial Hotel on the Exmouth seafront.

The band is very proud of the fact that it has a strong contingent of young players that is actively encouraged. The band consists purely of voluntary members aged from 12 to 83 plus years with the emphasis on getting younger members when others move on to college or careers. Ex young members from the band include those that have joined the ranks of the best band in the world, i.e. the Royal Marine Band Service, and others to college and university places to continue their musical studies.

The Exmouth Town Concert Band is entirely self-financing and donations are most important to keep the band and music alive.

We are always on the look out for new players. If you are interested, contact the Band Secretary Derek Roberts on 01392 490802.
